Cimla United (1) v Pontardawe Whites (1)
C. Underwood
Match-day Squad: Calim Bowen, Samuel Davies, James Edwards, Owen Evans, Steffan Lupton, Toby Oliver, Morgan Pemberton, Luke Phillips, Matthew Phipps, Cameron Underwood.
It was a welcome sight to see the boys back in action after the disappointment of the previous weeks fixture being lost to the weather. This match was always likely to prove competitive as it was the reverse fixture of the opening game of the season, which had been well fought and saw Cimla win by the only goal of the game.
The first half began with Cameron in goal for the home side and the goal-keeping duties for the first period were shared with Steffan. The first period saw the away side settle by far the better and look the more likely to open the scoring. This looked a certainty from one attack, but they were denied by an excellent double save from Steffan. The visitors continued to get the better of the first period but the Cimla defence stood firm and the half ended goalless.
The tactical substitution at half-time saw Toby replace Steffan in goal for Cimla.
The second half saw a lively start from Cimla, and after a succession of quickly taken throw-ins, Cameron had a strike on goal which was well saved by the Pontardawe keeper. Then, as Pontardawe put together an attack of their own, good work from James broke it up with an excellent tackle and he played a good ball forward to Owen, who sprinted wide and fired in a high cross which fell to Cameron who finished neatly for a 1-0 lead. This gave the home-side extra impetus and they were unlucky not to further extend their lead as they created a couple of good chances which they could not manage to convert. Credit must be given to the visitors who refused to rest, and they got a well earned equalizer following a spell of pressure of their own. The Cimla side responded well to this equalizing goal and pressed forward in an attempt to regain the lead, but were foiled in this as the final whistle sounded on a competitive and well earned draw for both teams.
The boys will look forward to trying to improve on this result next week, when they face another contest with Pontardawe, as they play host to the Reds next Saturday.
